Jaw Pain Has Soft-Tissue Roots. So Does the Relief.

TMJ dysfunction — the clicking, locking, aching, and tension that lives in the jaw — is one of the most overlooked areas in soft-tissue therapy. Most people don't realize that the muscles driving their jaw pain are accessible, treatable, and connected to the broader pattern of tension in the neck and skull.

Boulder Pain Relief offers targeted clinical treatment for TMJ and jaw pain, including dedicated 25-minute focused sessions specifically designed for this region.

What Drives TMJ Pain and Jaw Tension

The temporomandibular joint is where the jawbone meets the skull, just in front of the ear. The muscles that move it — the masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoids — are among the most powerful muscles in the body relative to their size. When they are chronically overloaded through clenching, bruxism (grinding), postural stress, or emotional tension, they develop trigger points that produce local jaw pain, radiating headache, facial tension, and the characteristic clicking or locking of TMJ dysfunction.

The masseter in particular — the thick muscle on the side of the jaw — is a primary trigger point site that refers pain into the jaw, cheek, teeth, and temporal region. Many people who report unexplained tooth pain, ear ache, or temple headaches are actually experiencing masseter referral.

The jaw muscles are also directly connected to the cervical chain. Forward head posture loads the suboccipital muscles and hyoid group, which alters jaw mechanics. Treating TMJ pain without considering the neck often produces incomplete results.

Clinical soft-tissue work targeting the jaw musculature — including external work on the masseter and temporalis, and where appropriate, intraoral work on the pterygoids — directly addresses the muscles driving TMJ symptoms.

Targeted 25-Minute Jaw Sessions

Boulder Pain Relief offers a dedicated 25-minute focused session specifically for jaw pain and TMJ dysfunction. This session targets the masseter, temporalis, and related cervical structures. It is precise, effective, and designed for clients who know exactly what needs attention.

For clients with broader neck and jaw involvement, a 55-minute session allows treatment of both the jaw musculature and the cervical chain that influences it.

Your session begins with a brief intake — understanding your jaw history, whether you clench or grind, any dental work or trauma, and how symptoms present. Treatment is adjusted accordingly.

TMJ Dysfunction Is More Common Than Most People Know

Boulder Pain Relief sees jaw pain in people who clench during stress, athletes who grind at night after heavy training, people with longstanding neck tension that has migrated into the jaw, dental patients referred for soft-tissue support alongside dental treatment, and people who have simply lived with jaw tension for so long they stopped noticing it.

Clinical massage therapy for the jaw is a well-established intervention. Many clients experience significant relief after their first targeted session.

Related conditions we treat

Jaw tension rarely exists in isolation. The cervical chain that connects to the jaw musculature also drives neck pain and tension headaches. Many clients presenting with TMJ symptoms also carry significant suboccipital and upper trapezius tension that benefits from treatment in the same session.
